2010 Annual Photography Contest Winners Announced!

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Thank You Ocean 1st Annual Photography Contest in 2010. We received many spectacular images that reflected the beauty and wonder of our California oceans. After much thought and discussion, we are thrilled to announce the first, second and third place winners as well as eight honorable mentions.

Congratulations to Gary Powell of Modesto, CA on submitting the winning image. Gary captured this rare view of a Janolus fuscus nudibranch in Morro Bay, California, a place he has become quite passionate about photographing in recent years. Gary is a co-founder of BelowMorroBay.com, a website devoted to sharing the beautiful and hard-won images of its inhabitants. Gary was honored at the 2010 California and the World Ocean conference in San Francisco on September 7-10, 2010 and will be featured in an upcoming podcast.

Congratulations to Norm Olson of San Diego, CA on submitting the 2nd place image. Norm captured this candid shot of a Pacific Harbor Seal pup on La Jolla Beach in San Diego, California. Norm will receive a copy of the beautiful coffee table book ‘Hidden Depths: Atlas of the Ocean’ courtesy of the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation in recognition of his photograph.

Congratulations to Elizabeth Haslam of Cambria, CA on submitting the 3rd place image. Elizabeth’s compelling photograph of a surfacing Risso dolphin inspires ocean stewardship and appreciation of the beautiful creatures that call the ocean home. Elizabeth will receive a Thank You Ocean reusable stainless steel coffee mug in recognition of her photograph.

Video Contest Winner Announced!

Congratulations to San Diego Mesa Community College Professor Paul Detwiler and his Marine Biology students Dominique Gilbert, Cheyne Palmer, Carlos Valdovinos and Kelly Hughes on submitting the winning video. The video makes a statement about the pervasive issue of marine debris and encourages people everywhere to dispose of litter in its proper place. Professor Detwiler and his students will be honored at the Blue Ocean Film Festival, to be held in Monterey Aug 24-29, 2010.
